Great Woodworking Ideas For Any Woodworker

Whether you are a beginner in your woodwork hobby or a novice, you’ll always need new woodworking ideas to keep you busy with your next project. Chances are that if you’re just starting out with woodworking, then there are a whole lot of projects that you’d like to begin.

It’s always a good idea to be honest with yourself and to determine your skill level first. A beginner is not going to be able to make nearly the amount of projects or take on quite the advanced tasks as those who have had decades of experience with woodwork projects. So if you’re having trouble coming up with ideas, here are some things to think about:

1 – Consider Your Household.

The first thing you should take into consideration is your own household. No matter who you live with, there is almost certainly something missing in your household, or maybe something that could be replaced. Maybe you could do with some new furniture? How about a rocking chair or a new coffee table. In the end, you can build almost anything from wood.

2 – Give Gifts You Made Yourself.

Why not give your self-made woodwork projects to other people. Do you have a friend or family member that would benefit from a nice set of carved coasters or a brand new computer desk?

Think about the person you want to give the gift to. What are they like? What do they like? What’s their taste like? What would they appreciate. There are so many possibilities to use wood for your perfect present: Picture frames, entertainment centers or CD/DVD holders, carved and engraved mirrors or jewellery boxes. Your imagination is the limit.

3 – Woodwork Courses.

Another way to generate ideas for projects is to invest in a woodwork course. This can be a particularly good idea when you prefer to see how things are done via video, which most courses include these days, and you also like to be taken by the hand, given step-by-step instructions, illustrations and great ideas. If you’re running low on project ideas then considering a woodworking course is definitely one of the best ways to get your creative juices flowing.

Considering what you need around the house, what others’ needs and wants are if you’re using woodworking ideas for a gift, and generating ideas from courses are all great ways to get your next project underway.

A Collection Of Great Basement Ideas

Most homes have a basement that either sits empty or is used for storage. What a waste that is for a room that ads an entire extra floor to your home! There are many different things you can do with your basement and uses you can have for it. All it takes is a little imagination! Here then, in no particular order, are some basement ideas you may want to consider:

1) The basement is a great place for a hobby room. For instance, some people like miniature trains and what better place is there than the basement to set up your realistic village and train track? The basement can be used for most any hobby and lets you get away, relax, and concentrate on your hobby.

2) Now that so many people have large flat screen TV’s, they need a room that can be devoted to watching TV. The basement is a great place to set everything up just like you want to have the in home theater experience.

3) Basement lighting can be critical because it will set the mood for the room. Basements typically have little to no sunlight and thus the artificial lights you choose are critical. Try things like string lights, globe lights, Onyx lights, and novelty lights to get just what you want the room to look like.

4) The basement will naturally be the coldest room during the hot summer months and it might be made into a bedroom or guest room. If your house does not have air conditioning, sleeping downstairs in the basement during the summer might be a “cool” idea and get you a better night’s sleep.

5) Your basement can also be turned into a themed area. Does your son like baseball or a certain sport? Turn your basement into a room devoted to his favorite team or sport. If you have a daughter it can be a room about whatever she is intensely interested in.

5 Great DIY Decorating Projects For the Home

There are many homeowners who like to do their own decorating projects themselves. Doing your own decorating projects is a great way to ensure that your own style and personality come through the decorating. Here are 5 great DIY decorating projects for the home.

1. Paint the Walls

Painting is by far the easiest yet most effective way to give a room a new look. The color of the walls is going to influence the decor of the whole room. Be sure that when you decide to paint the walls that you do it properly and prepare the walls as needed. This may mean filling in cracks and then sanding them down so that the wall is crack-free and smooth. It also involves a coat of primer and may involve a few coats of paint depending upon the color and the saturation of the wall.

2. Install Molding on the Walls

Molding is a great way to add a new touch to the walls. It can add some interest and appeal to an otherwise boring wall. You can install molding at the top of the wall such as crown molding or choose to go a different route and install a chair rail in the middle of the wall. You always want to paint or stain the molding before nailing it to the wall. You can always go back and touch up the nail holes with paint afterwards.

3. Personalize the Lampshades

If you can’t find the exact kind of lampshade that you want or you just want something that shows your style, then design your own lampshade. An easy way to do this is to take a white or cream colored lampshade and cut out figures or designs with dark paper such as black or red. Tape the paper to the inside of the lampshade and you have a designer lampshade that reflects your own personal style. You can also add items to your lampshade such as embellishments and ribbon to personalize it as well.

4. Make Your Own Artwork for the Walls

Even if you can’t draw or paint very well, you can still come up with your very own artwork for the walls. You just need to get creative and use items that you have. You can look for photographs, postcards, and book images to hang on the wall. Collages of items found in nature also work well for artwork pieces. An easy way to create your own artwork is to take a frame or blank canvas and wrap it in a patterned fabric to fit the style of the room. You can choose 2-3 different patterns and different sized frames and hang them in a cluster on the wall.

5. Make Your Own Window Treatments

There are many different non-sewing techniques to make your own curtains if you are not handy with a sewing machine or a needle and thread. Take a long silk scarf and drape it over a window curtain and you have instant interest around the window. You can also use such things as placemats and tablecloths for instant window treatments. If you do sew, there are plenty of patterns that you can find to make your own window treatments from whatever fabric you like.

A DIY decorating project doesn’t have to be difficult. These are just 5 of the many different projects that you can take on to decorate your home in your own personal style.

Easy DIY Home Improvement Ideas

Many enthusiasts of DIY home improvement differentiate between two specific classes of projects. The first class involves major renovations in the house, including:

• Replacement of floors

• Installation of new insulation

• Installation of a new roof

• Installation of wooden fences around a yard

The second type of DIY are smaller projects that delivers creative pleasure to the ones engaging in them. These small projects typically involve adding small yet useful objects inside the house. Though most of them involve one form of furniture or another, these smaller projects are recommended for those who are just beginning with DIY home improvement.

Small ideas but nice results

Free time, a bit of cash and a lot of good ideas is all you need to think of your own DIY home improvement project. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Windows- if you’ve been thinking for the longest time that the windows in your bedroom are creepy at night, why not replace them? Contrary to popular belief, it is easy to replace windows. All you need are a few traditional tools like a crowbar and a hammer, or a saw in some instances. Simply measure the window’s dimensions and purchase a window of the exact same size. Take down the old window frame, taking utmost care not to damage the glass. Then simply install the new window sets using window glue and a few bolts or nails.

• Gates- gates can be customized. If your own gate allows it, you may attempt to install name plates on your own gate, to identify your house easily. This would be a great idea especially if you live in a housing neighborhood, where houses generally look alike.

• Extra utility table- If you don’t have enough table when you go out for a yard picnic, why not build one yourself? All you need would be small planks of wood and a little ingenuity. First determine what particular table size you want. After making the proper measurements, simply follow the configuration of picnic tables you see everyday and voila, you have your own picnic table. DIY projects that involve wood are often durable because wood is a sturdy material.

• Floor design- tired of visible scratches on your floor? One way to successfully remedy old floors is simply installing new vinyl. Vinyl comes in a variety of colors and designs so you would be having a lot of fun and choices by simply choosing the design you like. The installation of vinyl is even easier- you simply need contact cement or other forms of strong adhesives to attach the vinyl to your floor. Just find the center of the floor area using a nylon thread and divide each area into quarters. Start with 1 quarter and finish by cutting to size when you reach the edge.

• Wall design- wallpaper is still in. You simply have to know how to install wallpaper properly. First, the walls must be free from dirt, moisture or grease before the application of the adhesive. Let the adhesive dry a bit first before attaching the wallpaper in small, manageable strips. Watch your bedroom or your living room come alive with the new look.

DIY Little Boy Room Ideas

Boys can be very active and you want to keep this in mind when you’re designing a room for them. Everything must be organized and easily accessible by your little fellow. Getting organized can take a little planning, but its well worth the effort. Once you get everything in place, you can start decorating. Hiring an interior decorator and making major changes can get expensive. Here are some ideas on how to organize and decorate in a cost effective, do it yourself, timely manner.

First take inventory of everything that you want to keep in the room. Start with the basics. Clothes need to be easily accessible to your and your child. Keep the closet nice and neat with high-quality children’s clothes hangers or children’s wooden hangers. Extra rods are easily added and can make twice the space in your child’s closet. Hang as much as possible to avoid over stuffing drawers. Closet organizers that hang from the rod can be great storage places for sports equipment, shoes or can be used to lay out school clothes for the week in advance. Use high shelves for extra bedding or out of season clothing. Hooks and behind-the-door racks are convenient for hats, book bags, belts and other small items that may not currently have a place to go.

The next step is organizing the toys. This is something that parents sometimes dread, but the effort is well worth it. When toys are organized, it makes cleaning the room a snap. Little boys will play with things that they once ignored and get the most out of the toys that they have. Toy boxes stuffed with every kind of toy is confusing and just looks like clutter when it’s opened. Toys are lost, crushed and parts are separated when they’re not organized. Let’s face it, it happens to everyone and it makes for money wasted on toys that do not get played with.

Divide toys into groups like super heroes, balls, sports equipment, big trucks, little cars, and so forth. Use existing shelves and toy boxes to separate each type of toy. If you have a large toy box, you can sometimes use cardboard boxes inside of it to keep things separated. You can also add buckets and extra shelving to the room for just a little money. Use the space under the bed for larger trucks, train sets and race tracks. Put games with small pieces up high so that you can dictate when they are taken out and ultimately dumped. This will help keep things organized and keep their toys and games together with all of their parts. No more wasted money or time searching for pieces and parts.

If you’re trying to save money, go with a theme that matches the bed spread or the current color of the room. Wall adhesive stickers are a great option for kids who really want a character themed room, but will soon outgrow it. They are easily removed and won’t leave marks on the walls. Kids have fun decorating their own room with stickers and the project will give you something fun to do with your child. Toys or balls hung from the ceiling add a cute touch to the room. Keep a dresser top or shelf clear for the character toys or sports equipment matching the theme to be displayed. Keep as much of the room as possible clear for play space and your little boy will have a fun new room to spend time in.

10 DIY Home Improvement Ideas

DIY Home Improvement Idea #1

Install handmade shelves. Rather than purchasing typical cookie-cutter shelves, consider visiting a local craft fair or woodworker for customized shelves. Everything from style, color, design and cutouts can be customized with handmade items. Shelves are ideal for storing tools in the garage or knick-knacks in the family room.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #2

Replace vinyl flooring or install new tiles. These days, convenience is everything. It’s easier than ever to replace vinyl flooring or install tiles with simple self-adhesive backing for easy placement. This will literally give you a new floor surface within a few hours.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #3

Install carpet. Before making a purchase, be sure to measure the area that you need to carpet. If you need to cut carpet, it’s not a problem and special cutting tools can be purchased at any home improvement store. Simply roll it out and secure it to the floor for an easy DIY home improvement project.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #4

Install a ceiling fan. Not only will this add beauty to the room, but it will also help to circulate the air. Just be careful during the installation process and when climbing up or down a ladder.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #5

If you are a big fan of wallpaper, then you already know that it can start to peel from time to time. It’s inevitable. At some point, wallpaper will need replacing and it’s arguably one of the easiest home improvement projects that you can do. Wallpaper is sold at any home improvement store and can be cut to fit any room in your home. During installation, be sure to smooth the paper as you go in order to avoid bubbled areas.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #6

If you like the idea of sitting out on the porch or deck and watching fireflies light up in the night, consider adding an outside addition to your home. Plans can be purchased online or at some home improvement stores, along with the materials needed to complete the job.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #7

Painting your home, either inside or out, is a very popular way of improving it’s overall appearance. Always be sure to read the instructions and use paint in a well-ventilated area.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #8

One of the more sensible DIY home improvement projects includes the installation of a dusk to dawn lighting system outside of the home. This type of lighting will automatically turn on if there is any movement outside of your home and is ideal for anyone, whether you live out in the country or in a larger area.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #9

As winter time rolls around, many people begin to consider replacing their windows to ensure that they are protected from the elements. Many people think of windows as simply something to look through but, in fact, they are much more than that. Windows can actually help to keep warm air inside your home and the cold air out during those harsh winter months, which will make it more comfortable for your family and also your wallet where heating costs are concerned.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #10

Install wall paneling. If you don’t like the idea of painting or simply prefer the look of paneling, a visit to your local home improvement store could be the answer to your next DIY home improvement project. Wall paneling is sold in sheets, is pre-cut and ready for installation. All you need to do is place it in the desired location and secure it.

Bathroom Vanity Cabinets Installation – DIY Remodeling Ideas

Changing the look of your bathroom from dated to timeless involves a little bit of planning and effort, but it will increase the resale value of your home. New bathroom vanities make a big difference, and you will enjoy your new bathroom every day. Here are a few tips and ideas to help you revamp your bathroom.

Bathroom sink vanities are a key part of the overall look of your bathroom. Choose a modern and elegant design, but don’t get too trendy. Otherwise the vanity will look outdated and garish in a few short years. Pick a style that complements your personal tastes. For instance, an antique vanity would look fabulous in a French country-inspired house. If your taste is more simple and refined, a glass vanity with clean lines and sleek design or dark wood cabinetry with marble will match the décor in the rest of your house.

Just because you have a light wood in your kitchen does not mean you must have the same color wood in your bathroom. Experiment with different color combinations at a local home improvement store or browse different websites for ideas. You can often find great deals online on the same remodeling supplies you find in retail stores, and the online prices are almost always much lower.

If you are planning on going the DIY route, be sure to shut off the water and disconnect the supply lines before you get started. Place a bucket under your pipes to ensure you catch any dripping water. Then, loosen the caulk on your old vanity with a putty knife or screwdriver. Carefully remove the old vanity, being extra careful not to damage the wall.

If you can find a helper to assist you with the removal of your old vanity, the task is much easier. Be patient, work slowly, and be sure to loosen all the caulk and remove any screws holding the vanity in place before you attempt to move it.

Once the old vanity is out of the way, bring the new vanity into the bathroom. Locate the studs in the wall, using a stud finder. Using shims and a level, position the vanity so it is flush with the wall. Then attach it to the wall with wallboard screws. It is very important to make sure the vanity is flush before screwing it to the wall.

Installing the new faucet before installing the vanity makes the whole process easier. Then, you avoid having to get up and under your new vanity during the installation process.

Secure the vanity top to the base with caulk, reconnect the plumbing, and caulk the countertop to the wall as neatly as possible. Wipe off any excess caulk or fingerprints and enjoy your beautiful new bathroom sink.

Bathroom sink vanities are a great way to change the whole look of your house. If you have had the same bathroom décor for 5 years or more, it is time to consider some new bathroom remodeling ideas. Whether you prefer a traditional look or a modern, contemporary design, a new vanity makes the room look clean and new. When you sell your house, you are sure to make back the money you invest on a bathroom remodel and then some, especially if you DIY.
